The General Surgery Residency at The Â鶹¹ú²ú (Â鶹¹ú²ú) is a fully accredited, five-year program. Our trainees are exposed to a wide spectrum of surgical diseases and training opportunities. The majority of the training experience is conducted at Â鶹¹ú²ú.
Â鶹¹ú²ú was established in 1845 and is the oldest, freestanding hospital in Brooklyn. Â鶹¹ú²ú has a long history of Graduate Medical Education and was the training site where Walter Reed completed his internship. We are a 464-bed, tertiary care hospital located in the Fort Greene section of Brooklyn. Fort Greene is experiencing a cultural and residential renaissance and Â鶹¹ú²ú is at the heart of that development, actively transforming our community and healthcare delivery system.
We offer two outside rotations for our trainees. Our PGY-3s spend one month at Kings County Hospital on a trauma rotation and one month at Columbia University Medical Center for a liver/pancreas transplant rotation. We have not graduated a class with a deficiency in any defined RRC category and routinely exceed minimum requirements by one to two standard deviations.
The Department of Surgery has experienced strong growth since 2010. The Department’s core teaching faculty currently consists of 15 full-time faculty, 10 part-time faculty and numerous voluntary faculty who provide case volume and educational experiences. Â鶹¹ú²ú has developed a multimillion dollar Simulation Center where residents receive training on laparoscopy, intubation, central line placement, laparoscopic and open suturing, bowel anastomosis, code simulations, and obstetric deliveries. The General Surgery Residents also have a dedicated resource room where computers and laparoscopic simulators are located.
Â鶹¹ú²ú offers residents extensive opportunities for General Surgery Residency training. In addition, our program has a strong history of assisting our graduates with obtaining postgraduate fellowships.
